After just a short drive on A1A south in beautiful and sunny St Augustine Florida, you will arrive at Fort Matanzas National Monument.
Free admission and plenty of parking space. Conveniently located, only about 15 minutes from downtown St Augustine and 45 minutes from Daytona Beach, Fort Matanzas is a must if you’re in this area. With a half mile nature walk and gorgeous views, there’s plenty to see here.
When we visited the park, it was only 2 months after hurricane Irma had passed. Even though the city of St. Augustine didn’t get much of the hurricane, St. Augustine Beach got some of the hurricane surge and high tides. This damaged the barge that makes the cross between the park and the fort possible. The actual fort is across from the bay, just a 5 minute sail, but it was closed. If visiting the park, call or check online if the barge is operational again. Follow the link below on this article.
With plenty of entertainment and food options all around, a trip to this park is a guaranteed fun packed day for the entire family. You can venture out just about half a mile more down A1A South and you’ll arrive at awesome fishing spots, nice undeveloped beaches perfect for a nice walk and to just sit back and relax.
